From Belgium to Infinity (and beyond)

Happy new year and greetings from freezing Finland with the temperatures falling below -20 Celsius at this time.

We say that you can watch “TV Everywhere” but our customer RTL Belgium took it one step further this past autumn when they went to ‘infinity’ with their RTL a l’infini service, powered by Booxmedia  cloud-TV technology.

This was one of the customer roll-out projects that we’d been working hard on over the last summer, and RTL Belgium is an interesting case study:

Their brief was to set up a full end-to-end cloud VOD platform, to offer regional, localised, French-language service to their customers. RTL Belgium is one of many European broadcasters who are now offering transactional and subscription services to their audience, and show that even geographically smaller regions can employ the latest technology like VoD subscriptions and catch-up libraries to enhance their products.

For this Belgium installation we provided not only the technological know-how but the engineering expertise as well through our white label platform with content transcoding and ongoing backend maintenance & monitoring. Going for our white label option means RTL Belgium can completely customize the user experience, so that their brand is instantly recognizable across multiple devices, including Samsung Smart TVs.

As RTL Belgium’s Marc Lellouche explains, the company can now offer an “enhanced experience” to customers. There had previously been a subscription service available since 2007, but the new Booxmedia-powered installation is a significant upgrade both in terms of technology and choice for RTL’s viewers – and will “fulfill their expectations about what a modern broadcaster can do” says Marc.

With a population of just over 11 million people, Belgium is a fascinating television market, with a need to cater for both French and Flemish-speaking audiences. Many broadcasters have made the switch to offering TV Everywhere services in the past year, including the M7 Group, Be TV and also this autumn Eleven Sports Network in addition to RTL.

Almost 100% of Belgian households subscribe to pay TV which makes the new RTL service all the more important, bringing choice and a range of channels to subscribers. As RTL’s Marc Lellouche puts it, they can now “offer content that is available anywhere, at any time, on different services at their convenience”.

The industry will see many more launches like this in 2016.
